Political strategist Alberto Lage and psychologist Iracema Rezende wrote the book from the inside of Brazilian political campaigns. They look at the emotional and psychological forces that act on candidates and draw out lessons that apply to anyone who leads or makes decisions when the pressure is on.
“Inside the Candidate’s Head: The Psychology of Running for Office – Lessons from Brazil’s Campaign Trenches” is now available to English-speaking readers worldwide. The book first topped Amazon Brazil’s bestseller charts in Portuguese before a Spanish edition took it across Latin America and Spain.
The authors released the original as “Cabeça de Candidato” in Portuguese in September 2025. It reached the top of Amazon Brazil’s rankings in Elections, Politics, and Social Sciences. Marcus Vinicius Baldo, co-founder of Compol Brasil, translated the Spanish edition, “Cabeza de Candidato: Dentro de la mente del poder | Lecciones de campañas en Brasil”. Political scientist Felipe Nunes contributed the preface to the Brazilian edition. Paulo Carlos López-López, Professor of Political Science at the University of Santiago de Compostela and spokesperson for Sumar Galicia, part of Spain’s governing coalition, wrote the foreword for the translated editions.
Looking beyond strategy
Rather than centering its analysis on polling, messaging, or electoral data, the book examines the psychological conditions surrounding candidates and campaign teams during moments of extreme pressure.
Drawing from years of political consulting and behavioral analysis, Lage and Rezende focus on the emotional dynamics that often remain invisible in public discussions about elections. Fear, ego, insecurity, overconfidence, and the inability to confront uncomfortable realities emerge as recurring forces influencing leadership decisions.

The dynamics described by the authors, such as pressure cultures, low psychological safety, communication breakdowns, and concentration of power, are presented as universal organizational patterns.

That international visibility was reinforced during the World Summit of Political Communication held in Montevideo from April 21 to 23, where Alberto Lage discussed the book’s central ideas alongside other Brazilian strategists participating in the event.
