A business hub in North Wales has made a significant impact on local entrepreneurship, supporting over 250 start-ups and small businesses in Gwynedd and Anglesey over the past 18 months.
Menter Môn Enterprise Hub, also known as Hwb Menter, has provided essential services to businesses through its two main locations: M-SParc in Gaerwen and Hwb Arloesi in Porthmadog. The hub offers a ‘start-up support package’ worth £2,500, which includes one-on-one advice, financial guidance, access to technology, and much more. In addition to this support, the hub has facilitated networking and training events, with up to 500 individuals taking part in online and in-person sessions each year.
According to an external evaluation report, Menter Môn’s efforts have made a “notable contribution to the entrepreneurial landscape” of the two counties, particularly through its “seamless support experience” for participants. The organisation has quickly become a vital resource for many aspiring entrepreneurs in the region.
Among the businesses benefiting from Hwb Menter’s services is award-winning XR Creative Director Klaire Tanner from Llanrug. Tanner highlighted the “genuine care” of the team, which helped her secure funding, navigate the start-up process, and access vital workshops. She said: “I honestly wouldn’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for Hwb Menter’s support.”
Another success story is Kico’s Dessert Bar in Llangefni, run by Emma and Vicky Roberts. The sisters launched their dessert business after identifying a gap in the market. With the guidance of their business adviser Aled, they were able to develop business plans, manage cash flow projections, and apply for grants. Emma said: “We also took part in online workshops that covered things like accounting and social media, which were invaluable.”
Arfon Timber Frames, a business run by Master Carpenter Mark Chapman in Caernarfon, also benefited from Hwb Menter’s support. Grant funding helped the company achieve industry accreditation and join professional trade bodies. Chapman, who now employs seven people, noted that the financial support was crucial in helping them achieve industry recognition in their first year.
Sara Lois Roberts, Project Manager at Hwb Menter, praised the hub’s team for their positive impact on the local business community. “It is truly amazing how far we have reached, and how many small businesses have benefited from our support,” she said. “For some, the financial backing was pivotal in taking next steps, for others it was advice, desk space, or building confidence.”
The project has not only supported entrepreneurs but has also contributed to the local economy, creating job opportunities and fostering innovation in a wide range of industries. Roberts expressed hopes that the hub will continue to make a difference for business owners in Gwynedd and Anglesey, helping them grow and thrive.
As more businesses seek guidance and financial backing, Menter Môn Enterprise Hub is poised to remain a key player in North Wales’ entrepreneurial landscape.
