A Newcastle-based creative agency is setting its sights on further international growth after being named Agency of the Year at the North East Marketing Awards.
The Unknown Creative, an independent brand agency, has expanded its global portfolio significantly, with 80% of its client base now international. The firm, which specialises in life sciences, aviation technology, transport, and green energy, is aiming for a further 25% revenue increase in the next 18 months—taking its turnover to £1.25 million.
Founded in 2009 by John Dunne, the agency has doubled its headcount over the past five years and recently launched its own Design School to nurture local creative talent.
Strong Growth and Ambitious Plans
Reflecting on the agency’s success, John Dunne, founder and creative director, said:
“2024 was a strong year for us. Our team grew by 20%, our client base by 30%, and we saw a 25% increase in revenue from specialist international projects in life sciences, biotech, aviation technology, and green energy.
“We have big ambitions for 2025, with plans to upskill and strengthen our team, as well as hiring for two new roles.”
Dunne emphasised the agency’s commitment to originality and high-quality creative work, adding:
“Since launching The Unknown Creative, we have worked hard to deliver outstanding design and strategy, alongside a legacy of craft, integrity, and innovation.”
Expanding Global Client Base
The agency has worked with a number of high-profile international clients. Among its latest projects is the launch of CryoCase, an innovative biotech product developed with US-based BioLife Solutions. The product, a rigid container for biological samples, is designed to replace fragile plastic bags, helping to reduce wastage and plastic use in the medical sector.
Another key client is travel technology firm SITA, for which The Unknown Creative has produced a series of animations and films, including work on the company’s new Automated Border Control (ABC) Gates now being deployed in airports worldwide.
Closer to home, the agency has supported national hair and beauty franchise Saks for the past 14 years, recently delivering a 50th-anniversary campaign for the well-known brand.
Investing in Talent and Community
Beyond its commercial success, The Unknown Creative is committed to developing new talent. Last September, the agency launched The Unknown Creative Design School, an in-house programme designed to help graduates and entry-level creatives develop their skills and advance their careers.
The agency also provides pro bono creative support to The Eve Appeal, a charity dedicated to raising awareness and funding for gynaecological cancer research.
As The Unknown Creative continues to expand, it remains focused on delivering top-tier creative solutions while supporting its team and the local creative community.
